Who He Was

Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco February 20th, 1902 and died April 22, 1984. Due to an earthquake in 1906 he broke his nose which left it permanently crooked. This, mixed with shyness, caused him to not be able to fit in very well in school as a child. He also may have been dyslexic. It was because of the fact that he couldn't fit in well that he spend a lot of time outside, being in nature. While his love of nature started out in San Francisco, it was being in Yosemite Sierra that really solidified things for him. He began to visit Yosemite Sierra in 1916 every year until he died. In 1927 he came in contact with Albert M. Bender who helped him create his first portfolio.
Ansel Adams was one of the greatest technical masters of photography in history. He wrote 10 volumes of technical manuals for photography which are still the most influential books written on the subject. He was determined to show photography as a fine art. He greatly contributed to the MoMA in New York getting a photography wing.
Apart from photography he was once a musician and he was a great advocate for environmental issues.

Examples of His Work
Why I'm Influenced by Him
Ansel Adams was incredibly dedicated to his craft. As stated in the biography at anseladams.com he worked every day of the week, often up to 18 hours a day. This was also back when photography was not as easy as pushing a button and getting a photograph, rather, there were lots of chemicals and tools that had to be used. In order to get all of the amazing photographs he did, he had to haul all this equipment around.
This was also back in a time when it was still debated somewhat often whether or not photography counted as fine art. Of course, others before Ansel started the recognition but he was certainly very influential in getting it better recognized.
Aside from this his work is very beautiful and I believe he had an eye for capturing stunning and memorable images of nature. I also appreciate him as his goals and ideas for photography are similar to mine.
